Skitterbrain

Eleven-year-old Larnie, pioneer girl in Kansas, loses the family’s milk cow when her pregnant ill mother most needs it. To prove herself responsible and not the skitterbrain her father names her, Larnie sets off alone on the Wichita Trail to retrieve the cow. Along the way she encounters a wolf pack, a crazy woman, a young robber who steals her horse, and, finally at the end of the trail, 20,000 head of cattle to sort  through.

“Much historical detail and an emphasis on female courage and resourcefulness” --School Library Journal

“In True Grit fashion, this fast-moving exciting tale, with the spunky heroine should appeal to everyone.”

--Checklist, State Library of Ohio

“Brown details life in Kansas with much flavor.”
